NIGERIA: THE Assistant Inspector General (AIG) of Police in charge of Zone 2, Mr. Adamu Ibrahim, has ordered more security surveillance in schools along waterways in Ogun and Lagos states.

The move, Ibrahim said, was taken to reduce incidents of kidnapping and activities of militants in those areas.

The AIG gave the order in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, during an official visit to the state command of the police force.

While addressing senior officers of the command, Ibrahim challenged them against human rights abuse.

“There is the need for our men and officers to respect human rights; whenever you make arrest you must arraign within the stipulated time provided by the law,” the AIG said.

“The emerging crime we have, like I said earlier, the militants on the waterways may want to cause mayhem,” he said, adding: “So I wish to call on the command to please put extra efforts now because the schools are resuming and some of these militants may want to embarrass by kidnapping some students or some prominent citizens.”

“So I urge you to improve security around schools that are closer to the waterways so that they do not have a chance,” the AIG further said.

The Ogun State Commissioner of Police, Ahmed IlIyasu, told the AIG that the command had been able to restore confidence in the minds of the public.

This development, Iliyasu said, resulted in crime reduction across the state despite shortage of manpower.

“The security system we have on ground is working so well and we are driving criminals out of the state,” the Commissioner said, adding: “Ogun State, as you heard from the Government House, has no hidden place for criminals; we are willing and we are working as a team to flush them out of the state.”

He further said: “I want to draw your attention to that area that has been problematic for decades, the Lagos/Ibadan expressway.  Spanning from Berger, the interchange and the border with Ondo State we have been doing everything possible to make the road safer.”

He, however, challenged the police authority in the state to beef up security around schools close to the waterways to reduce incident of kidnapping.

“There was a general agreement on the need for more community policing as a formidable way of involving all and sundry in securing life and property in the state,” Iliyasu said.
