NIGERIA: A NEW vista of educational advancement has enveloped Lisabi Grammar School, Abeokuta as some old students on Thursday commissioned and donated e-library and furniture equipment to their alma mater.
The President General of the association, Dr. Olumide Sorunmu, said that the gesture by the 1997 set, which came 20 years of passing out of the school, was part of activities marking their anniversary and to give back to their old school.
Sorunmu, a veterinary doctor, who lamented that social media was taking over the reading culture from the students, explained that the library would instil serious reading culture into them.
“Unfortunately, civilization is fast turning our young ones away, hence a need for total re-inclusion of library into learning,” he said, adding: “We have encouraged them to go back to the library, pick their books and sink their heads into them.”
Sorunmu also said: “We want them to feel at home as they gather knowledge by themselves. From this day, we want the library to become the womb of greatness for our young academicians, hence we have come with this token.”
“To this end, on this day we are donating sets of furniture to the school library. We want our young ‘Lisabians’ to feel comfortable as they sink their heads into books,” the President General added.
He stressed that the furniture would only occupy about 40 computers with equal number of students operating the systems.
Sorunmu, who listed many old students of the school who have at one time or the other occupied prominent position, to include the Founder of the Latter Rain Assembly, Pastor Tunde Bakare, and the former Deputy Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria, Mr. Tunde Lemo, however, pleaded with the students to focus on their studies in order to be great in life.
“Take your destiny in your hand. Help yourself to unlimited greatness because no one can really put you down until you sponsor the coup yourself. Invest your life into learning and learning alone,” the vet doctor said.
The Principal of the senior secondary arm of the school, Mr. Olufemi Okeowo, commended the old students and assured that the donation would help promote the good reading culture among the students.
The Acting Head Boy, Olukoya Ayobami, stated that the e-library would boost the students’ reading culture and also enhance their academic performance.

Great initiative. It is highly commendable. The old students association can be a launchpad for the revitalization of Nigerian public schools.
In same manner the 1982 set of Oke Ona Grammar School is planning to do a bigger thing in October 20 and 21 2017 .
The Old boys Association can be to the rescue of the ‘old schools’.
