Alleged fraud: Coalition reports Fashola to EFCC

NIGERIA: A COALITION of anti-corruption bodies, the Civil Society Network Against Corruption (CSNAC), has dragged the former Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babatunde Fashola, to the Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC).

The development came on the heels of the Coalition Against Corrupt Leaders (CACOL) Executive Director, Mr. Debo Adeniran’s claim recently that investigation conducted by his organisation showed that the 1.36 kilometre Lekki-Ikoyi link bridge cost N6 billion contrary to N25 billion said to have been spent by Fashola administration.

Adeniran alleged that many petitions sent to the anti-graft agency regarding frauds committed under Fashola were unattended to, particularly considering the more than N500 billion debt under the immediate past administration.

In the same vein, the Socio-Economic Rights Accountability Project alleged that the government failed to open its books on the nitty-gritty of the US $200 million World Bank education fund under Governor Akinwunmi Ambode’s predecessor.

“CSNAC is hereby requesting that these allegations against the former governor of Lagos State be thoroughly investigated and the falsity or verity proven,” the Chairman of the body, Mr. Olanrewaju Suraju, demanded.

He added: “We would like to believe that this petition would be given utmost attention as speculations in the media and among the general public is that members of the governing party currently enjoy special consideration and therefore not investigated by the anti-corruption agencies.”

“This perception, if allowed to fester, will be detrimental and dangerous to the spirit of the new wave in fight against corruption led by the current administration,” he further demanded.
