UKRAINE: FIFTY medical students from Osun State have graduated from the 213-year-old V.N. Karazin Kharkiv National University, Kharkiv, Ukraine, with one of them emerging as the overall best graduating student.

The Vice-President, Research and Education of the university, Prof. Mykola O. Azarenkov, said at the convocation held over the weekend that Abiola Lateefah Oyeleye was not only the best student in the Faculty of Medicine, but the overall best graduating student in the university.

According to Azarenkov, Oyeleye stood out in her final year examination scoring 95.6 per cent in the KROK 2 examinations in the second oldest university in Ukraine founded in November, 1804, which has produced no fewer than three Nobel Prize winners –Ilie Mechnikov (Physiology/Medicine), Simon Kuznet (Economics) and Lev Landau (Physics).

The joyous students were among the 87 sponsored by the Osun State government in 2013 to study Medicine in the university out of the 98, who were admitted to study Medicine at the state owned university.

GatewayMail gathered that due to the non-accreditation of their medical programme for lack of a standard teaching hospital, the students, in their year third, fourth and fifth years, could not continue with their education.

In order to help them complete their studies, the Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola administration sent the Osun State University students to the foreign university to complete their medical studies.

The Deputy Governor, Grace Titi Laoye-Tomori, however, expressed satisfaction on the success achieved by the students, saying that the completion of the programme was a dream comes true.

Laoye-Tomori, who represented Aregbesola at the event, said: “We feel fulfilled that the students, who would have had their dreams aborted, have today realised their ambition of becoming medical doctors.  This is one of our outstanding success stories in Osun.”

“We have kept faith with these students, their parents and guardians towards realising their life time ambition,” the Deputy Governor, who was accompanied by the Chairman of the House of Assembly Committee on Education, Honorable Bamisayemi Folorunso Oladoyin and the Innovation, Science and Technology Commissioner, Engr Oluremi Omowaiye, stated.

She added: “In spite of the acute paucity of funds that our state has been facing, we never renege on our promise to see them through.  Today, we are happy we have caused their dreams to become realities.”

Also speaking at the convocation, the Vice Chancellor of the Osun State University, Prof. Labo Popoola, stated that the successful completion of the programme was a clear indication of leadership with vision.
