NIGERIA: THE police in Ogun State have shot dead two bandits who were members of an armed robbery syndicate that specialised in highway robberies.
The Police Command Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Oyeyemi, said that the robbers were shot dead along Sagamu-Ore-Benin road, after they robbed a 34-passenger bus with registration number Lagos AAA 649 XN belonging to Chisco Investment.
While showing the corpses to journalists at the Ogbere Divisional Police Headquarters, Oyeyemi said that the police squad attached to the division successfully killed two of the robbers during gun duel.
According to him, exhibits recovered from the gang include three pump action rifles, two locally made pistols and machete.
He also said that other items recovered from them are cash, phones, laptop and wristwatches.
At the police headquarters, GatewayMail correspondents saw the affected passengers waiting for identification and possible recovery of their dispossessed valuables, while the robbed vehicle was found with the window glass shattered allegedly by the bandits.
One of the victims, Donatus Adie, told reporters that the robbery occurred around 1.08am last Thursday at the J4 Junction in Ogbere along the Benin axis of the expressway.
Adie explained that the armed robbers blocked the luxury bus with another 18 passenger bus and attacked them.
According to him, a robber dragged the driver away from the steering wheel and immediately drove all passengers into the bush where they were robbed of their valuables.
He explained that the bus was heading to Aba-Owerri-Port-Harcourt route after departing Jibowu in Lagos when the bandits suddenly appeared from the nearby bush.
Adie stated that the victims were in the bush when policemen, who probably might have been tipped off by passersby, arrived the scene and chased the robbers.
Also speaking, Mr. Kunle Apanishile, said that one of the robbers punched him seriously before snatching his wristwatch and N30,000.
However, Oyeyemi further said that policemen got information that a robbery incident was going on at the area and the Divisional Police Officer for Ogbere Division, Mr. Agunbiade Adeyinka, and his men stormed the scene.
According to him, the robbers fled the scene, but the police traced them to their hideout inside the bush where two of them were killed while others escaped.
The police image maker pleaded with hospitals around Ogbere to report any patient with gunshot injury immediately to the police.
He assured that the police would go after the fleeing robbers to apprehend them.
