CANADA: ONTARIO government is to invest about $190 million (N62.1 billion) in the next three years to create 40,000 real world learning opportunities for students and recent graduates through the Career Kick-Start Strategy
The fund is part of the money set aside by government in the 2017 budget, GatewayMail gathered on Friday.
By this decision, with effect from September this year, Ontario will enrol no fewer than 50,000 students in almost 1,900 Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) programs that will allow them to focus on a career path that matches their skills and interests.
Similarly, the program will allow the students while meeting the requirements of the Ontario Secondary School Diploma.
Education Minister, Mitzie Hunter, who made the announcement at the Economic Club in Toronto, said that the move is to help more young people prepare for successful careers with hands-on work experience and career counselling.
Hunter gave this hint while speaking on the investments that the Province is making in financial literacy and on-the-job learning.
GatewayMail gathered that the new measure represents 2,000 additional students and 108 new programs for the 2017 and 18 school year, adding that students can choose from 19 different sectors, including agriculture, health and wellness, and transportation to help them prepare for apprenticeship training, college, university or the workplace.
According to government news release, over the next three years Ontario will introduce 17,000 more Grade 11 and 12 students to career options while obtaining their high school diploma, through the expansion of the SHSM program.
