NIGERIA: THE Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Ogun State Area Command, Idi-Iroko, has seized 645 bags of smuggled rice and impounded 10 vehicles.

*Ogun Comptroller of Customs, Mr. Sani‎ Madugu.

The command’s Public Relations Officer, Mr. Abdullahi Aliyu Maiwada, said in a news release made available to GatewayMail at the weekend that the seizure happened between May 19 and June 3, 2017.

Maiwada stated that a truck with about 200 bags of rice hidden with woods on top and a scrap bus containing 30 bags of rice of 50 kilogram each concealed with wood were intercepted and seized.

He also said that a Toyota Carina II containing 15 bags of 50 kilogram of rice and eight gallons of 25 kilogram of vegetable oil were also seized.

“The rice in the vehicle was concealed in virtually all the nook and crannies of the vehicle (spare tire, roof, engine compartment, front and back bumpers),” the spokesperson said.

He further explained: “To this end, the Customs Area Comptroller (Comptroller Sani Madugu) seized this opportunity to inform the public on the immense danger of smuggling to our economy.”

“It is pertinent to inform you that the rate, desperation and determination at which smugglers perpetuate their illicit act is mind boggling, as they deployed unhealthy and highly compromised method of concealing edible and other items,” Maiwada lamented.
