NIGERIA: OGUN State Governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun, on Thursday narrowly escaped death on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

The bullion vans of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) rammed into the Governor’s convoy at Ibafo while he was heading to Lagos.

The Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Mr. Juwon Soyinka, who made this known, said that the CBN convoy of bullion vans damaged the escort vehicles in the governor’s team.

Soyinka said in a news release that the drivers were driving dangerously and hit the vehicles in their attempt to overtake the governor’s convoy without regards for the safety of other road users.

Soyinka added that ‎sensing danger, the Governor’s escort commander spoke to the CBN drivers through the public address system mounted on his vehicle, warning them to desist from such reckless driving.

“Not only was the Governor’s escort commander ignored, the CBN convoy drivers went ahead to crush his vehicle and subsequently went after other vehicles in the Governor’s convoy, including the Governor’s official car,” Soyinka said.

He further explained that the CBN drivers were later halted by the security team attached to the Governor.

Soyinka added that Amosun, in his reaction said that the actions of the drivers were “lawlessness and the height of impunity.‎”

“If this could happen to a governor within his territory, you can imagine what they would do to our citizens who are simply going about their legitimate business,” Amosun said.

Soyinka stated that Amosun expressed disappointment with the reckless manner in which the CBN bullion van drivers often conduct themselves on the road and warned that such acts of impunity will not be tolerated within the borders of Ogun State.

“We will not allow such senseless and reckless behavior in Ogun State,” Amosun said, while Soyinka stressed that the development was not the first time the Governor would have cause to personally caution reckless CBN convoy drivers in the state.

“On several occasions, the Ogun State Governor had to personally turn back reckless CBN bullion van drivers who often drive against traffic, with impunity, on the Lagos-Ibadan expressway,” Soyinka said.
