NIGERIA: OGUN State Governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun, has given reason why his administration established Vigilante Service.
The Governor said that the step was taken in order to strengthen crime prevention in the Gateway State.
Amosun disclosed this at the closing ceremony of “Sensitization Course on Grassroots Operation” for Vigilante Service Officers at the NSCDC’s College of Security Management in Abeokuta, the state capital.
The Governor, who was represented by the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Chief Jide Ojuko, noted that the synergy between the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSDC) and the Vigilante Service of Ogun State (VSO) would further strengthen crime prevention.
Amosun said that his administration considered security of lives and properties seriously, hence its resolve to establish the VSO in 2011 to complement other security agencies’ efforts to make the state safe for living and businesses.
Earlier, the college’s Provost, Commandant Oluwasefunmi Awosusi, had urged the participants to put into practice all that they’ve learnt during the training.
Awosusi stated that the training was meant to equip the VSO officers with the skills required to enhance efficiency in the discharge of their duties.
The training, she added, would enable them work in partnership with the NSCDC operatives to “curb the menace of cultism, child abuse, kidnapping, vandalism, drugs abuse and other vices” within the communities in the state.
The Assistant Commandant General of the NSCDC, Southwest and Lagos, Poopola Waheed, in a chat with journalists, commended the initiative.
Popoola stressed that the synergy between NSCDC, VSO and among other sister agencies would help secure the state and make residents sleep with their two eyes closed without any fear.
