NIGERIA: THE Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Police, Foluso Adebanjo, has warned officers and other ranks within the police force against accidental discharge, extra judicial killing and corrupt practices.

Adebanjo, who is in charge of South West states of Ogun, Oyo, Osun, Lagos, Ondo and Ekiti, read the riot act on Wednesday in Abeokuta during his working visit to the Ogun State Command.

The DIG declared that any police personnel, no matter his or her status, who kills anyone, either through accidental discharge or any other means, would be tried and dismissed within 24 hours.

He also cautioned against human rights abuse of Nigerians, stating that the police authorities would not tolerate any impunity from any officer or rank and file within the police force.

Adebanjo further stated that any police personnel, who kill anybody illegally, will not be protected, but be arrested, tried and dismissed.

“We will not condone any killing of Nigerians because lives are precious to Police,” he said, adding: “We don’t want accidental discharge.  Police Act 2337, you must know how to use your arm.”

He stressed: “We must give Nigerians their respect.  Do your job very well, but no impunity.  The management of police does not tolerate impunity.

“Once you arrest any suspect, you must release him or her within 24 hours except in a sensitive matter such as kidnapping, armed robbery and others.”

Adebanjo, who had earlier held talks with Ogun State Governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun, and also held security meeting, described the Gateway State as relatively peaceful with little security challenges.

He maintained that he had been monitoring the state before he emerged as the DIG, while stressing that the police and other security chiefs in the state should be commended for the efforts.
