Commission probes sex abuse allegations against late British PM

The Independent Police Complaints Commission said that it had commenced investigation into Wiltshire Police force’s handling of the claims against Heath.
Specifically, the British police watchdog is interested in knowing why Heath, who was elected leader of the Conservative Party in 1965, was never prosecuted despite being informed of the criminal offence.
The commission said in a statement that it had begun probe into allegations that a criminal prosecution was never instituied against Heath, who remained in the House of Commons until 2001 and died in 2005.
The IPCC, which said that the allegations of sex abuse and failure to prosecute Heath were levelled by a retired senior officer, is looking into whether the Wilthshire Police made any attempt to investigate the former prime minister.
It also stated that it was probing the allegation probably the former British leader, who became prime minister in 1970 and served for four years, “may have been involved in offences concerning children.”
It would also unearth if the allegations were investigated by the police or not.
And the police explained that the commission had been given the licence to investiage the allegations, while asking for more evidence regarding allegations of sex abuse against children.
“We take all reports of child abuse, either current or that occurred in the past very seriously,” the police said, adding: “Some people may never have spoken out about the abuse they have suffered but we would urge them to please contact us and to not suffer in silence.”
The foundation in honour of Heath, a vocal critic of Margaret Thatcher, explained in a statement that it was ready to cooperate with the police in their investigation.
“We welcome the investigation by Wiltshire Police which we wholeheartedly believe will clear Sir Edward’s name,” the Sir Edward Heath Charitable Foundation said.
