NIGERIA: A FINAL year student of the Department of Political Science at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), Joseph Emmanuel, has been murdered by suspected cultists.
The incident occurred at Ugwoke Lodge located at Hilltop, an off campus accommodation some few meters away from the university.
The victim, it was gathered, was in company of his friends at his residence when the suspected cultists, about three who were armed with guns and machetes, stormed his home and macheted him before shooting him twice in the head.
One of his friends, whose identity was not immediately known, and who was with him in the room when the incident happened was shot in the back and sustained injuries.
GatewayMail learnt that Emmanuel was immediately taken to the UNN Medical Center and later transferred to Bishop Shanahan Hospital in Nsukka where he was confirmed dead.
A friend of the deceased, who pleaded anonymity, described the incident as unfortunate, adding that the deceased was the one who introduced him to the ponzi scheme, MMM.
“It’s quite sad. I know him very well. I have known him for quite some time now. In fact, he was the one that even introduced me to join MMM,” he said, adding: “He was my guide. I don’t know what could have led to this.”
Another resident in the area, who simply identified himself as Mark, said that the murder could be a retaliatory attack by rival cult gangs.
“This Sunday, they shot somebody at that gate over there. This may be a revenge mission,” he said.
When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Superintendent of Police Ebere Amarizu, confirmed the incident, adding that investigations and manhunt for the suspects have commenced.
