New NNPC boss sacks corporation’s executive directors

NIGERIA: APPARENTLY in line with President Muhammadu Buhari’s charge to him to clean the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) of corruption, the newly appointed Group Managing Director has fired the firm’s executive directors.

Dr. Emmanuel Ibe Kachikwu, who until the appointment was the Executive Vice Chairman and General Counsel of Exxon-Mobil (Africa), told the directors it was time to go, just as he intend to reduce the executive directors to four from nine.

The sack of the nine group executive directors, which received the blessing of the president, it was learnt, was with immediate effect.

Among those relieved of their duties are Dr. Dan Efebo (Corporate Services), Mr. Bernard Otti (Finance and Accounts), Ms. Aisha Abdurrahman (Business Development), and Mr. Joseph Dawha (Exploration and Production).

Also asked to go home are Mr. Ian Udoh (Refining and Petrochemicals), Mr. Adebayo Ibirogba (Engineering and Technical), Dr. David Ige (Gas and Power), and Dr. Attahir Yusuf (Business Development).

It would be recalled that former President Goodluck Jonathan, March last year , appointed five directors to fill vacant positions in the corporation.

The ex-president’s former Senior Adviser on Media and Publicity, Dr Reuben Abati, in a statement, said Jonathan approved the appointment of Udoh, Group Executive Director, Refining and Petrochemicals; Efebo, Group Executive Director, Corporate Services; and Abdurrahman, Group Executive Director, Business Development.

Abati stated that also appointed were Mr Adebayo Ibirogba, Group Executive Director, Engineering and Technical; and Dr Joseph Dawha who would serve as Acting Group Executive Director, Exploration and Production.

Buhari had on Tuesday appointed Kachikwu who hails from Onicha-Ugbo in Delta State, reputed as a First Class degree holder in Law from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, the Nigerian Law School and Masters coupled with Doctorate Degrees in Law from the Harvard Law School.
“He started his working career with the Nigerian/American Merchant Bank before moving on to Texaco Nigeria Limited where he remained for about eight years before joining ExxonMobil,” the Special Adviser to the President (Media and Publicity), Mr. Femi Adesina, said.
