NIGERIA: TWO toddlers on Wednesday narrowly escaped death but their mother and another person were killed in an auto crash that occurred along Awa-Ijebu along Ijebu-Ode Road.
The vehicle the eight months and two years old, with others, were travelling plunged into the river last Sunday.
The deceased persons were said to have boarded the vehicle alongside other passengers at Okubadejo Fuel Station near Imowo Roundabout in Ijebu-Ode heading to Ibadan before the accident occurred.
The victims were rescued from the wreckage by other motorists plying the road and later taken to the State Hospital, Ijebu-Ode for treatment.
The Chief Matron of the hospital, Bola Akinwande, told GatewayMail that the toddlers sustained minor injuries, but that they were responding to treatment while they were also eager to see their mother.
Akinwande said that the eight-month-old baby did not allow anyone to cuddle her while the brother could only call “Abu,” probably referring to her father.
She stated that before their mother died she was brought in unconscious and was incoherent in speech.
The matron said that the woman, before her death, could only mutter words such as “open the gate for me and let me go” and “I want to open the gate.”
However, an official of the Federal Road Safety Commission, Ago-Iwoye Unit, Adebola Olootu, who was at the scene, told our Correspondent that two Opel vehicles were involved with 13 passengers leaving two passengers dead.
Olootu said that the survivors were receiving treatment at the hospital while the bodies of the deceased had been deposited at the mortuary in Ijebu-Ode.
Our Correspondent learnt that as at the time of this report, the two children might later be taken to the SOS Children Village, if relatives of their parent did not come and claim them on time.
