NIGERIA: THE Vigilante Service of Ogun State (VSO) has read riot acts to its officers.
It warned them against leaking of vital information in their possession and desist from the use such data for personal benefit.
The Commander of the VSO, Soji Ganzallo, gave the warning on Monday at the orientation programme for the unit Commanders of Local Governments and Council Development Areas held at Vigilante Academy in Ilaro.
While delivering the lecture entitled “Making the VSO a Household Name in Community Policing,” Ganzallo stressed that such information should not be divulged to others except in the proper discharge of their vigilante duties.
“Members should respect information about vigilante policy and operations as confidential unless authorised to disclose it in the course of their duties,” he said.
The Commander also enlightened his members to engage in collaboration with police and other security agencies in combating, preventing and curbing crimes in the state and its environs.
He stressed that vigilante has roles to play in providing information to the police and other security agencies on criminals and their activities.
Ganzallo further said they should cooperate with sister security agencies in protecting public establishments, plants and equipment.
The Commander urged them to discover any permanent or temporary hideouts of criminals, who engage in fraudulent activities, drug trafficking and other criminalities.
The vigilante boss reminded members of the service on the need to help secure a safe and just society in which the rights and responsibilities of individuals, families and communities are properly safeguarded.
“We must be compassionate, courteous and patient, acting without fear or favour or prejudice to the rights of others,” Ganzallo said, adding: “We need to be professional, calm and restrained in the face of violence and apply only that force which is necessary to accomplish our lawful duty.”
