CAMEROON: A LARGE number of football fans in Cameroon celebrated late into the night on Sunday following the victory of their Indomitable Lions at the African Cup of Nations in Gabon.

Fans in major cities of Douala, Limbe, Garuoa and the capital, Yaounde, who watched the game in public viewing centres, went into jubilation shortly after the Zambian referee blasted the final whistle.

The Cameroonian government has planned a grand reception for the team at the State House on arrival from Gabon.

Cameroon, which defeated Egypt at the final on Sunday, will host the next edition in 2019.

The Lions, who were down with one goal, scored two goals in the second half to cut short the joy of the Pharaohs from lifting the cup at the final played at Stade Lamitie, Libreville in Gabon.

The two second-half goals from substitutes Nicolas N’Koulou and Vincent Aboubakar sealed Cameroon’s opportunity to join each confederation’s best teams of Australia, Chile, Germany, Mexico, New Zealand, Portugal and hosts Russia at the FIFA tournament, which holds between June 17 and July 2 in Russia.

The win was a revenge for the Cameroonians who lost to Egypt in 1986 and 2008 finals.

Benjamin Moukandjou won the man of the match while Bassogog was awarded the player of the tournament, which is the sixth time the Egyptian coach, Hector Cuper, lost cup finals in his career including two UEFA Champions League and UEFA Cup Winners cup.

The Lions will play at the Russia 2017 in Group B against Chile, Australia and Germany after emerging as African champion at the games where no fewer than 65 goals were scored by 16 countries that participated at the three weeks of football festival where 32 games were played.

Hi, thank’s for the article. BTW what do You think about referee in Copa Del Rey semi-final Barca – Atletico? In my opinion Jesus Gil was terrible. At least two fatal decisions: Atletico goal in 60′ was obviously onside and second yellow for suarez. Spanish football has huge problem with referees.
