Obasanjo laments low number of women in positions of power

NIGERIA: FORMER President Olusegun Obasanjo is not happy that a large number of women are not in position of authorities – both in the government and private organisations.
The ex-President made the lamentation when he received the first female Commandant of the Civil Defence College of Security Management, Ogun State Command, Rachael Awonusi who paid him a courtesy call at his Presidential Hilltop, Abeokuta.
“We have not gotten enough women in higher authority both in public and private sectors, and this calls for attention and consideration,” Obasanjo said, adding: “We have gone past relegating women.”
Obasanjo, whose government approved the Bill that gave legal teeth to the corps as a security agency, said that the organisation has been doing well since inception.
He stated that the uplifment of the first female boss of the corps in Ogun State should be seen as a source of encouragement for other women aspiring to the top echelon of their careers.
The former President, who also charged Awonusi to see her job and roles as a responsibility that should be well tackled, stressed that the popular saying that ‘what men can do, women can do better’ should be her watchword.
Obasanjo said that he would continue to assist the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps at all times, while encouraging the management not to hesitate to contact him whenever his support is needed.
Awosusi had earlier said she visited Obasanjo to receive his blessing and to also tap from his wisdom.
The Commandant told the ex-President that the college would continue to do its best and would not disappoint Obasanjo and other stakeholders.
She disclosed that the College had concluded arrangement to name the Security Resource Centre of the college after Obasanjo.
