Why I provided borehole in my ancestral village, by Seriki Egba

NIGERIA: DEFINITELY, it is a good decision to take a deep look at one’s background and act accordingly by taking decisive steps to offer assistance where necessary.
This is exactly what the Seriki of Egbaland, Chief Oluwatosin Fadare, did recently to his Igbakule community in Odeda Local Government area of Ogun State, where he grew up over five decades ago.
His fellow kith and kin were extremely happy, as displayed on their faces with smiles and songs of joy, when Fadare, who is also the Lukotun of Kemta, donated a borehole to the village where he learnt his tutelage.
“I decided to construct the bore hole for my people in Igbakule because that was the village where I was born and lived for 15 years most importantly because I was a victim of guinea worms while I was at the age 10 years,” Fadare told GatewayMail in an interview.
The highly elated Seriki stressed: “Construction of this borehole has put an end to guinea worms disease in this village.”
According to him, his experience while growing up with his parents gave him an idea of the life his people were living without adequate potable water.
He explained: “My parents and other villagers rely solely on a small river in that village for the supply of drinking water; up till today there is no presence of any government in that village.”
“No school, no hospital, no electricity and any other social amenities in the village,” the Seriki, who recently attended the sixth biennial convention of Egba National Association USA and Canada in Toronto, Canada, lamented.
Fadare, not only decided to give back to his community because of inadequate quality and difficult to access potable water, but because the village played significant roles in his formation of life.
“The village played major roles in my formative life as it made me to be very hardworking and humble,” he explained, adding: “In those days, my first assignment whenever I wake up in the morning was to prostrate and greet my parents and other family members in the next houses while they reciprocated by praying for me.”
The Seriki of Egbaland, who is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN), said that growing up with his parents, particularly his father, before he left the village to Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, taught him the spirit of hardworking.
His words: “I started following my father to farm at a tender age of four years. All these trainings taught me how to be humble and hardworking. I left the village to Abeokuta at the age of 15 years.”
He still had a clear memory of his growing up in the village. “Memories of the village then were so many, playing during the moon time with other youths, going for hunting with my friends and of course going to school in the neighbouring village, St. Peters Primary School, Ile Olu, which was about 50 minutes trek from my village.”
Chief Fadare, who is one of the high ranking chiefs close to the Alake of Egbaland, Oba Adedotun Aremu Gbadebo, has a vision for his ancestral village.
He declared: “In the next decade or so, I want to see Igbakule village with all social amenities like uninterrupted electricity, hospital and, of course, primary school, so that the children will not have to trek for about one hour to the other village before getting access to education.”
Because of his love for his people, Chief Fadare told GatewayMail of his plans. He said: “The other plans I have for my people are so many. With the help of Almighty God, I have been giving out scholarships for the children in that village up to first degree while one is currently undergoing his PhD and one is also writing the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria final level examination.”
“I want to continue doing this because I believe that education is the best legacy you can give a child,” the Egba high chief stated.
What has he been doing to mobilize other indigenes of his root for the developmental efforts in the community? He swiftly responded: “I have not done much in respect of mobilising others from the village to join my efforts in revamping the village and make it modern for the people because some are not willing to do, while those that I can easily mobilise are the ones I had impacts in their lives.”
But on the governmental level, Chief Fadare said: “Well as for government, I don’t want to deceive myself because Igbakule village is just one out of over 300 villages in Odeda Local Government of Ogun State.
“The state government is currently doing massive constructions in the major towns in the state now and with the tight financial constraints facing the country, it will be ridiculous if I believe major developmental projects can come to my village now or in the nearest future.”
