NIGERIA: AFTER their disappointment to get New Year gifts from the Ogun State Governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun, aged women, housewives and mothers with babies strapped to their backs, on Friday besieged the residence of the Deputy Governor, Mrs. Yetunde Onanuga.
GatewayMail gathered that the desperate female politicians had trekked for about 35 minutes from the Governor’s office at Okemosan and laid siege to the residence of Onanuga, who was away as the time they arrived her official home at the GRA in Abeokuta.
When told that Onanuga may not return early enough, the women insisted on continued siege until her arrival to ensure they get their gifts before departing for their respective homes to feed their family members.
For several hours, the 31 women, who felt displeased at the Governor’s apparent stinginess to them at his office, waited until the arrival of the Deputy Governor who met them at the entrance to her residence.
Onanuga was said to have been shocked to see the politicians and after she enquired on their mission, the women said they were there to get their New Year gifts after they were disappointed by Amosun.
The Deputy-Governor, after listening to their plight, gave them two bags of rice with undisclosed amount of cash.
The politicians carried the bags of rice in a hurried manner to Iwe-Iroyin Press Centre, which is a stone’s throw to the Deputy Governor’s home, with majority of them trailing the woman holding the cash and two others carrying the rice apparently to avert diversion.
After sharing the rice and money, the women left the venue with smiles visibly written on their faces.
One of them often called “Kososi”, told GatewayMail: “We were at Governor’s Office this morning to see the Governor for New Year gifts, but he was not forthcoming. So, we resolved to go to the home of the Deputy-Governor to seek same gestures.”
She explained further: “On getting to the Deputy Governor’s place, she wasn’t at home, but she later met us at the gate, and after listening to us, she gave us the two bags of rice.”
