The anti-graft agency, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), on Tuesday quizzed Elujoba and Akeredolu for several hours after which they were directed to make statements on what they know about the missing “university’s Fixed Assets and Endowment Fund.”

The two principal officers, GatewayMail learnt, were summoned to the Ibadan Office of the commission for questioning following the petitioned forwarded to the anti-graft agency by undisclosed persons.

It was further gathered that Elujoba cornered N7 million from the fund as furniture allowance without approval from the supervising Federal Ministry of Education and the Governing Council of the university.

The Head, Public Affairs, Ibadan Zonal Office of EFCC, Mr. Ayo Oyewole, confirmed the development, saying that the two officers were already in the commission’s office.

“The VC and Bursar are still being interrogated,” the commission’s spokesperson told GatewayMail, adding: “They may likely be detained, but they are still making their statements right now.”

“The Acting Vice Chancellor, Obafemi Awolowo University , Prof. Anthony Elujoba and University Bursar, Mrs. Aderonke Akeredolu are being quizzed at the Iyaganku office of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC Ibadan, today 13th December, 2016, in respect of an alleged case of illegal and corrupt diversion of N1.4 billion,” Oyewole said.

He added: “According to the petition, Elujoba allegedly diverted the sum from the University’s Fixed Assets and

Endowment Fund without approval from the Federal Ministry and Governing Council of the University to pay some unapproved allowances from which he paid himself N7m (Seven Million Naira) furniture allowance.”

The development came barely four weeks after the Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, Prof Olusola Oyewole, alongside Senator Adeseye Ogunlewe, who resigned his position about three weeks ago as Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council, and former Bursar, Mr. Moses Ilesanmi, were arraigned in court on 18-count charges of corruption.

The trio, who were alleged to have misappropriated over N800 million fund of the university, appeared before an Ogun State High Court presided over by Justice O.O. Majekodunmi, who ordered that Ogunlewe and Oyewole be remanded at the Oba prison before they were released after perfecting their bail conditions, and Ilesanmi returned to EFCC’s detention.

The court had adjourned the commencement of trial of the accused persons till December 16, 19 and 20, but Ogunlewe and Oyewole had returned N4 million and N2.5 million respectively while the ex-Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Development), Prof. Felix Kolawole Salako, also refunded N1.4 million.

Three others members of the university council also refunded money totalling N4.5 million, the fund which was confirmed by the EFCC spokesperson.

The commission’s image maker said: “The Vice Chancellor, Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, Prof Olusola Oyewole and four other staff of the University have refunded N6.5million (six million and five hundred thousand naira) to the Ibadan Zonal office of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).”

He added: “Prof Oyewole, other staff and members of the Governing Council allegedly benefited from various allowances which are illegal according to the Salaries and Wages Commission.”

The commission’s image maker explained that Oyewole’s N2.5 million was “from the allowances he allegedly collected to finance his daughter’s wedding.”

Oyewole stated that the EFCC was fully determined to ensure that all those “who benefited from the illegal allowances windfall restitute whatever they have allegedly collected to the coffers of the University.”
