NIGERIA: BARELY few hours after no fewer than 18 workers were sacked, the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB), in Ogun State has threatened disciplinary measure against non-teaching workers of the university.

The university last Thursday sacked the staff following the recommendations of the Governing Council at its meeting while the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Olusola Oyewole, had earlier dismissed five others.

Among those relieved of their jobs are Mr. A.O. Salaam (Department of College of Biological Science), Mr. O. P. Somoye (Department of Agricultural Media Resources and Extension Centre), and Mr. F.A Bankole (Directorate of Environmental Management Unit).

Others, among the 23 workers dismissed, are three medical doctors – Dr. Ajayi A.O, Dr. Olaniran I.O. and Dr. O.O. Salami, two health workers – Mr. Oyero, a laboratory scientist and Miss K.O. Adeyemi, a medical record officer.

GatewayMail further gathered that Salaam, Somoye and Bankole – who had earlier been placed on indefinite suspension – were accused of conduct prejudicial to the smooth running and governance of the institution.

The trio had petitioned President Muhammadu Buhari and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) accusing the Chairman of the Governing Council, Senator Adeseye Ogunlewe, Oyewole and the former Bursar, Mr. Moses Ilesanmi, accusing them of allegedly misappropriating several millions of the university’s funds.

The EFCC thereafter summoned Oyewole and Ilesanmi to the Ibadan office of the commission where they were quizzed.

Few days after the incident, the workers were relieved of their jobs and placed on indefinite suspension.

The management, however, last Friday warned that any non-teaching staff who failed to be on his or duty post by Monday, November 4, should expect appropriate sanction in line with the directive of the Governing Council.

It said in a “Circular to all non-teaching staff” with reference number FUNAAB/REG.11 dated Friday, November 11, 2016 that the warning came following the council directive to the management to mete out punishment to the erring workers who fail to show up for work.

“The Governing Council at its meeting of Thursday, November 10, 2016 considered the report of recent events and happenings on campus.  Council noted in particular the lingering absence of some non-teaching members of staff from duty without permission,” the circular signed by the Registrar, Mr. M.O. Ayoola said.

It explained further: “Council expressed its displeasure at the development and directed that such absentee staff be advised in their own interest to resume work latest on Monday, November 14, 2016 failing which Management should take whatever measure it deems necessary within the Rules and Regulations of the University to handle the matter and restore normalcy and discipline on campus.

“Consequent on the above, Management hereby directs all non-teaching staff to be at their duty posts immediately.”

The circular further warned: “Any non-teaching staff not available at his or her duty post as from Monday, November 14, 2016 and not officially on leave will be sanctioned accordingly.”

“The above is for the information of all staff of the University for Immediate compliance please,” it emphasised.
