Police nab five over N56m stolen pharmaceutical products

NIGERIA:  DETECTIVES attacked to the Anti-Kidnapping Unit of the Nigeria Police Force Zone 2 Command Headquarters, Onikan, Lagos, have arrested five suspects for conspiracy and stealing.

The men were alleged to have stolen pharmaceutical products worth about N56 million in Lagos, the Zonal Command Public Relations Officer, Superintendent Muyiwa Adejobi, said.

“On 10th October, 2016, one Isaac Ugwu, the CEO, Peakins Pharmaceutical Company Limited, Plot C, Mobolaji Johnson Estate, Lekki Phase, Lagos reported an alleged case of conspiracy and stealing of pharmaceutical products via a petition to the Assistant Inspector General of Police in charge of Zone 2 Command Headquarters, Onikan, Lagos and the Anti-Kidnapping Unit was directed by the AIG for investigation,” Adejobi said in a press release on Monday.

According to the police image maker, the petitioner alleged that sometime this month, he caught one of his staff, Emmanuel Okechukwu, with a carton of Funbact ‘A’ valued more than N400, 000 stolen from his warehouse.

Following this report, Emmanuel was arrested for proper investigation, Adejobi said.
“During the course of investigation, Emmanuel confessed to the crime and mentioned his accomplices,” Adejobi further said, adding: “His arrest led to the arrest of Ikechukwu Orji and Chisom Azubuke, a co-staff, and Uchechukwu Ofoepeka and Goddy Ogobi, who are security men at the estate where the industry is located.”

The police image maker explained that when interrogated all the suspects confessed to the crime and revealed that the nefarious act has been on since the last May.

According to him, detectives discovered that about 102 cartons of LORNAT DS tablets valued at N71.78 million, 200 of FUNBACT A worth N16 million and five cartons of PAALAXIN tablets estimated at N200,000 were already stolen.

He explained that an estimated N55.980 million have been stolen from the industry so far.

“The suspects have already been arraigned in court on two-count charge of conspiracy and stealing contrary to sections 409 and 285 of Criminal Laws of Lagos State of Nigeria,” Adejobi said.

He stated that Chief Magistrate Court One, Chief Magistrate Mrs. Sola Adeoye, admitted the suspects to N1 million bail with two sureties each with landed property at Lekki and Oshodi respectively.

“The Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of Zone 2 Command, Lagos, AIG Abdulmajid Ali, has condemned such cruel act, particularly at this time when many manufacturers are struggling to sustain their businesses,” Adejobi explained.

He added: “He, therefore, urged industrialists and business men and women to carry out security check or test on their intending employees to avoid such wicked criminal act.”
