Police train SARS operatives on human rights

NIGERIA: THE Nigeria Police Force has organised a three-day workshop to train the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) operatives on human rights and police-citizens relations.

The workshop was organised by the Inspector- General of Police, Mr. Ibrahim Idris, in conjunction with a Non-Governmental Organisation, Nigerians Unite Against Terror led by Dr. Joe Okei-Odumakin and was held simultaneously at the 12 zonal commands all over the federation.

Idris, who was represented by the Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of Zone 2 Command, Lagos, Mr. Abdulmajid Ali, urged participants at the workshop to imbibe the teachings and knowledge the workshop offered since the present leadership of the Nigeria Police keyed into the paradigm shift and restructuring of the systems to have a better country.

He warned operatives of the SARS not to engage in any act that can drag the name of the Nigeria Police Force in the mud, the Zonal Public Relations Officer, Zone 2, Mr. Muyiwa Adejobi, said in a press release.

The police boss, who declared the workshop open, at the conference Hall of Zone 2 Command, Onikan Lagos, appreciated the resource persons from the NGO and Civil Society Organisations and selected senior police officers, who have taken their time to prepare lectures on fundamentals of modern policing with a view to improving on the practices of the Police.

According to Adejobi, the police boss warned that anyone caught in any unprofessional conduct will be severely dealt with.

The resource persons at the workshop included CP Chris Ezekie, Commandant Police College, Ikeja who spoke on arrest and detention, ACP Ishola Babaita who spoke on scene of crime management and community policing, and Mr. Ganzallo who represented Okei-Odumakin.  He spoke on human rights and police-citizens relations.

The workshop, which ended last Friday, focused on many crucial and relevant topics as related to modern policing practices.

Many of such workshops will also be organised across board for police personnel all over the country, particularly within Zone 2 command, Adejobi said.
