Police nab fake customs officer, police inspector in Ogun

NIGERIA: A MAN who falsely claimed to be an Assistant Comptroller of Customs and has been using the services uniform to extort money from unsuspecting members of the public has been arrested.

Similarly, a fake police inspector has also been arrested by policemen attached to Mowe Division inn Ogun State.

The state Police Command said that the suspect, Wasiu Ariyo, was arrested when he wrote a letter on Nigeria Customs Service letter head paper to Nestle Nigeria Plc, Agbara requesting for 100 empty plastic of steel drums.

“The company management after approving his request became suspicious in the way and manner the suspect collected the drums and subsequently alerted Police,” the Police Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Oyeyemi said in a press release made available to GatewayMail.

He further explained: “The company was advised to lure him back to come and collect the remaining drums; as soon as he came, detectives from Agbara Division promptly got him arrested in full custom uniform.

“On interrogation, the suspect confessed being a fake Custom Officer. Though he has been a Custom Officer before and he has been dismissed from the service since 2010.”
The female suspect, Victoria David, according to Oyeyemi  , was nabbed when she approached the DPO Mowe and introduced herself as a serving police inspector attached to a Division in Rivers State.

Oyeyemu further explained that the DPO, who doubted the authenticity of her claim, quickly made a phone call to the division she claimed to be serving and was told that such name does not exist there.

“She was promptly arrested and on interrogation, the Kogi State born woman confessed that she has never been a police officer in her life and that she bought the uniform and identity card in Port-Harcourt,” the PPRO said.
The image maker further explained that the Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Iliyasu has ordered a thorough investigation into the two cases and the two suspects should be charged to court soonest.

In a related development, the command has smashed an armed robbery syndicate that has being terrorising Ogijo and is environs.

“The operatives from FSARS led by DSP Uba Adams got an information that the gang had camped themselves in their hideout at Sotogbo area where they were planning to attack their next victims,” Oyeyemi said in a press release.

He added: “The operatives swung into action and stormed the place where two members of the gang, namely Sesan Awosan and Tunde Saka, were arrested while two others escaped.”

According to him, items recovered at their hideout included five pump action riffles.

He stated that Iliyasu has ordered a serious manhunt for the escaped members of the gang.

Iliyasu, who commended the efforts of the FSARS men, Oyeyemi stressed, also appealed to the public to partner with the police by giving them useful information in order to rid the state of crime and criminality.
