Six Mapoly lecturers escape sack, get demotion for gross misconduct

NIGERIA: BUT for the magnanimity of the management, six lecturers of Moshood Abiola Polytechnic, Abeokuta in Ogun State would have picked their certificates to begin looking for jobs elsewhere.

The culprits – M.A. Ademuyiwa (Director, School of Business and Management Studies), M.A. Ajayi (Head of Department, Accountancy), R.A. Oduwole (Lecturer), J.K. Ogunwede (Lecturer, Accountancy Department), Pius Agbebi (Lecturer, Hospitality, Leisure and Tourism Management) and M.A Adesola (Lecturer, Banking and Finance Department) – were found guilty of gross misconduct, an offence which attracts automatic dismissal.

The management said that the offences of the lecturers included awarding unjustifiable bonus marks to students, and awarding of inherent 20 percent bonus marks to all students across board, contravention of the extant rules of concession for upgrading, breach of trust and abuse of office, contravening the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) convention on grading, and indiscriminate award of marks.

According to the management decision, Ademuyiwa was demoted from his Director status by one grade, while Ajayi (Head of Department), Agbebi, Adesola and Oduwole were also demoted to the next grade level.

The offence, the polytechnic authorities said in the letters made available to GatewayMail on Friday, was scandalous in nature and a denigration of the sanctity of examination and assessment.

The polytechnic, in a letter of demotion signed by Deputy Registrar, S.A. Ashaye, and handed over to all the lecturers, said that they were found guilty after the report of the Staff Disciplinary Committee ‎set up to probe the allegations.

It stated that the management at its recent meeting considered the report of the Committee on the allegations and found the officials culpable.

“This act constitutes a gross misconduct which should ordinarily attract summary dismissal from the service of the polytechnic, in accordance with section 10.4 of the rules and regulations guiding conditions of service of staff of the polytechnic,” the polytechnic said in the letter,” the institution told the lecturers.

The polytechnic explained that out of magnanimity it decided to mitigate their punishment to demotion to the next grade levels.

The demotion, the management stressed, took effect from last September 27, and would subsist until the culprits would earn the right for promotion to the next level cadre.

“However, the management in its magnanimity has mitigated your punishment to demotion to the next grade level with effect from Tuesday, 27th September 2016 until you earn the right for promotion to the next cadre while your present salary remains personal to you,” the polytechnic said.

The management also explained to the culprits that they would not be given any position of authority cum responsibility for the next five years and would not enjoy Tetfund sponsorship of any sort for the same number of years.
