NIGERIA: DISTRUBED by inadequate teachers in primary schools in Enugu State, the government has commenced the recruitment of over 2000 teachers.

The Chairman of the State Primary Education Board, Chief Ikeji Asogw‎a, stated this in a chat with newsmen that as the new session begins about 2000 teachers would have been engaged.

“The process is on-going now; the recruitment exercise to help us in the classrooms,” he said.

Asogwa also disclosed that government had committed N3 billion towards the constructions of new classrooms, renovation of existing ones and providing furniture for school children and their teachers and equipment for the schools for the learning process.

“The contracts for the building of toilets in all public schools have also been awarded for this phase; most of them are being completed as we speak,” he said.

Asogwa added: “We want to make sure that every primary school in Enugu State has a fully functional toilet system in place.

“So as we are improving the learning environment we are also improving the learning process for our children.”

“We embarked on verification exercise to actually know our staff strength in respect to tutorial and non-tutorial staff in our establishment,” he said, adding: “We were able to find over 1000 ghost workers and we have presently delisted them from our payroll and our nominal roll.”

He also said: “By doing that we did not just get rid of those un-existing characters we also saved the state some money because those monies were going into the wrong hands; paying people who did not exist and were not doing the job.”

“So we are now going to get the real teachers now to do the job and get them paid,” he added.

Asogwa further said: “I want to give you a guarantee that by the end of this year if you go into our primary schools you will see a great difference in the learning environment and the learning process.

“And then when you test our children you will also see that there is great improvement from what it used to be in the past.”
