GatewayMail observed that a ‘report card’ issued to a student by the renowned Abeokuta Grammar School, Idi-Aba, Abeokuta, showed an ordinary writing sheet which contains examination percentage scored by a student.

In the card, which has the official stamp of the school, the resumption date and the class which the student was promoted to were written on it.

The development, it was gathered, was as a result of the neglect of the Education Ministry to provide running cost for many of the secondary schools in the Gateway State.

While expressing disgust on the ‘report card’, a parent, Olanrewaju Adeoti, told GatewayMail that the development was a reflection of the decay due to government’s non-committal disposition to education.

Adeoti, who said that the situation was regrettable, further lamented that the larger percentage of students whose parents cannot afford fees in private schools may have their future for quantitative education endangered.

Some parents, who also bemoaned the situation, pleaded with the government to wade in quickly and redress the situation appropriately.

According to them, the embarrassing development gave out the government as merely toying with the future of the innocent students.

The Principal of Abeokuta Grammar School, Mr. Rotimi Farounbi, who confirmed that the school issued the ‘report‎

card’ in question, however, explained that it was just a notification and not report cards for the students.

According to him, the school will still issue proper report sheet to the students, apparently when the resumption of schools is about two weeks away.

Farounbi said: “My brother, it is not report card but notification for the parents; we are still going to issue report card to the students.”

After he was reminded that the students had commenced their holiday‎ long time ago and resumption is less than two weeks, the principal insisted that proper report cards would still be issued to the students before the new academic session.

Also speaking on the development, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, Kola Fagbohun, said that government would investigate the matter as the matter was shocking to him.

“We heard about it and we are investigating because that is ‎strange,” Fagbohun said, adding: “We shall find out how the school came about it.  It is shocking.”
