NIGERIA: NO fewer than 69 students of the Lagos State University, Ojo-Lagos, have been expeled for various examination malpractices which included impersonation, use of fake docket, fake receipts, and smuggling of coded answers written on quick teller receipts into the examination halls.

The university’s Senate on Tuesday ratified the expulsion, which was recommended last June 2 by the Committee of Provost, Deans and Directors on Examination Misconduct at its 228th Statutory Meeting, while it also ordered that 25 others should be suspended for the 2015/2016 academic session.

The decisions were contained in a release entitled “University Senate ratifies the expulsion of sixty (69) students for examination misconduct, gross misconduct and cultism.”

“The University Senate on the recommendation of the Committee of Provost, Deans and Directors on Examination Misconduct at its 228th Statutory Meeting held on Thursday, 2nd June, 2016, considered and ratified the expulsion of Sixty-Nine (69) students and the suspension of Twenty-Five (25) others for the 2015/2016 Academic Session,” the university management said in a release published on Tuesday, August 2, 2016.

It stressed: “Meanwhile, another Twenty-Five (25) others had earlier been suspended for various offences pending their appearances before the constituted panels.”

According to the management, other reasons for the expulsion included use of someone’s receipt to write examination; use of fake docket/impersonation; imported pieces of paper relevant to the course into examination halls; and the use of fake examination docket and LASU’s identity card during examinations.

It also said that some of the students were asked to go because of bringing coded answers written on quick teller receipts; importation of prepared examination answer booklets into the hall; snapping of the course note and copied from phone during examinations; and female students using their male counterparts to impersonate them during examinations.

Others who would not complete their courses over the examination misconducts, according to the university, are those students caught with prepared answers right in the examination halls; those found searching for answers on their mobile phones; students who brought jotted notes into the examination halls and caught using the papers in answering examination questions found to be relevant to the examination questions; and members of Aiye Cult group who engaged in a fight.
