NIGERIA: FROM the Committee for the Defence of Human Rights (CDHR) has come a piece of advice to President Muhammadu Buhari.
The CDHR charged Buhari not to sectionalize his administration’s crusade against corruption, just as it pledged its support to the anti-graft war.
The committee also urged the President to ensure that he spends the recovered money stolen by public officials on the development of the country.
The CDHR, which made the plea on Thursday in Abeokuta while protesting at the Ogun State Governor’s office, enjoined Buhari to see that all on-going corruption cases are pursued to a logical conclusion.
The CDHR, through its Chairman, Folarin Olayinka, however, presented a letter to Governor Ibikunle Amosun for onward transmission to the President, while also expressing its opposition to the level of corruption in the country.
“The Nigerian masses are not satisfied with the situation of things hence we want the President to look inwards,” CDHR said, adding: “The corruption war should not be sectionalized.”
It added: “Wherever the looters are, they should be hunted and brought to book. We are saying that the returned loot is enough to fix electricity, infrastructure and reposition our country.”
Amosun, who received the letter, lamented that the current situation in the country was critical.
The Governor promised that the letter would get to the President within 24 hours.
Amosun, who was represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Barrister Taiwo Adeoluwa, however, urged fellow citizens to be patient with the present administration.
He assured that efforts were being made by the Buhari government to better the lots of Nigerians
“Where we find ourselves as a country is shameful,” the governor said, adding that Nigeria needs discipline, transparency and good governance.
He further stressed: “We are not happy about happenings in our land. What President Muhammadu Buhari is doing is to bring to governance discipline, commitment and the fear of God.
“It is a difficult process because corruption must fight back. It is shameful, but I must state very clearly that what has taken 16 years to mess up will be difficult to clear in a spate of 10 months.”
