NIGERIA: SENATOR Abubakar Bukola Saraki has been elected as the new President of the Nigerian Senate.

Similarly, Yakubu Dogara, from Bogoro/Tafawa Balewa Federal Constituency in Bauchi State, was elected the Speaker, House of Representatives, defeating Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila, who represents Surulere Federal Constituency of Lagos State.

Dogara, who was the Chairman House Services committee in the 7th House, polled 182 votes as against Gbajabiamila`s 174 to get the nod to succeed Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, who ended his tenure to become the Governor of Sokoto State.

Saraki is to be assisted in carrying out his legislative duties by Ike Ekweremadu (PDP Enugu West Senatorial District) as Deputy, while Yusuf Suleiman Lasun (APC Irepodun, Olorunda, Osogbo Federal Constituency in Osun State) is Dogara`s Deputy.  Lasun got 203 votes to defeat Mr. Monguno Tahir (APC Marte/Monguno Nagazai federal constituency of Borno State), with 153 votes.

Ekweremadu, with 54 votes, defeated Mohammed Ali Ndume who scored 20 votes.

Saraki, who represents Kwara Central Senatorial District in the Upper Chamber of the National Assembly, emerged as a consensus candidate at the time no fewer than 51 members of the All Progressive Congress (APC) were holding meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari at the International Conference Centre, Abuja.

Though Saraki, a two-time governor of Kwara State, is a member of the majority APC, but he was not the consensus candidate of the party, just like Dogara.

Senator Ahmed Lawan, who was picked by APC as its official candidate was at the meeting with Buhari throughout the voting process.

The Clerk of the National Assembly, Salisu Maikasua, announced Saraki as the new president at the voting session attended by 57 senators.

A highly elated Saraki commended Buhari for not intervening in the election of the leadership of the Senate, saying that the president`s stance had laid solid foundation that would ensure stability of the legislative arm of government.

The new Senate president praised his predecessor, David Mark, on his leadership in the past eight years, while urging his fellow lawmakers to live up to the expectations of Nigerians who voted for them.

He expressed appreciation on his election and promised that the 8th Senate would legislate on laws that would ensure creation of jobs.

According to him, he would play key role in the repositioning of the nation`s economy with focus on the oil sector, adding that he would be just, equitable and fair.

“I am most honoured and privileged to be elected to serve as President of the Senate.  I accept with humility and respect the honour you have conferred upon me today,” he told his colleagues who adjourned sitting till Wednesday.

“I want to thank all members of the National Assembly for the maturity and patriotism in the exercise we have just concluded in electing the leadership of the 8th Senate,” Saraki said, adding: “As the President of the 8th Senate, I shall be guided by the enormity of the responsibilities that this moment imposes on all of us.”

He stressed: “This new Senate must make laws that will make doing business in Nigeria more competitive.

“The change that our people voted for is a change from a life of poverty and misery to a life of prosperity, happiness, security and comfort, accountability and respect for democracy.

“This is a change that all of us in the National Assembly must strive to justify as Nigerians want to see a proactive National Assembly,” he maintained, stressing further: “It will be my responsibility to protect the independence of the legislature in the overall interest of our democracy.”

“Our quest for autonomy must not lead us into pursuing adverse relations with other arms of government,” Saraki said.

He added: “In the coming days, we shall be converging to hammer out an agenda that will help us focus and deliver on the minimum expectations.”

Pick a fantastic Heating and air conditioning business. You might want to pick one which includes a reliable popularity. It’s important that this has been all around for many years which is reinforced by a strong reputation in customer care. Select one having educated specialists and skilled employees that can help with a myriad of shopper wants. They may be able to handle any HVAC work however simple or complex.
