NIGERIA: APPARENTLY due to controversy, the Ogun State House of Assembly has directed the State Independent Electoral Commission (OGSIEC) to conduct referendum in five of the 37 proposed Local Government Council Development Areas (LCDAs).
The order was given by the Speaker, Suraj Adekunbi, on Wednesday at the plenary session of the assembly.
Adekunbi urged the electoral umpire to conduct the exercise within two weeks at Abeokuta North East, with proposed headquarters at Ita-Iyalode; Sango/Ijoko with headquarters at Sango; Coker Ibogun, at Ibogun; Afon at Oloka Afon; and Ifesowapo at Imodi-Imosan.
Adekunbi further instructed the Transition Committee Chairmen of the affected Local Government Councils, whose authorities the LCDAs fall under, to forward a letter of resolution on the acceptance of the creation of the LCDAs to the Assembly after the exercise.
The Speaker hailed the people of the state for trooping out to be part of the public hearings on the creation of the LCDAs.
He explained that their presentations at the forum would assist the Assembly to give the best to the citizenry.
It would be recalled that the Assembly had a forth night ago organized a three-day stakeholders’ forum to harness the inputs of the citizenry on the creation of the LCDAs to further bring governance nearer to the grassroots.
Amosun had early March this year sent the names of no fewer than 37 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) to the Assembly for the approval of the lawmakers, to be added to the existing 20 local governments.
Amosun, in a letter, had asked the lawmakers for the legal power to create the LCDAs, the exercise which was first embarked upon by the late Chief Bisi Onabanjo of the Unity Party of Nigeria (UPN) administration in 1984 and Alliance for Democracy (AD) government of ex-Governor Olusegun Osoba in 2003.
While the military administration of the then Col. Oladipo Diya cancelled the additional local governments created by Onabanjo, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) government of ex-Governor Gbenga Daniel scrapped the councils added by Osoba administration on assumption of office in 2003.
The Speaker of assembly, Suraju Adekunbi, told his colleagues at the plenary then that he had received a letter from the governor in this respect.
Adekunbi explained that the request by Amosun was in furtherance of government’s attempt at meeting the yearnings of the people through the delivery of dividends of democracy close to them.
He said that the governor stated in the letter that the creation of the LCDAs would further bring government closer to the people and ultimately ensure further development.
