NIGERIA: WITH effect from April, 2016 ending, any civil servant in Ogun State who failed to produce his or her Bank Verification Number (BVN) would not collect salary.

The government of Senator Ibikunle Amosun said that this measure was part of the agreements reached between it and the labour leaders at a meeting held on Friday.

The Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Barrister Taiwo Adeoluwa, said that the new initiative was agreed upon by the union leaders at the parley chaired by the Deputy Governor, Mrs. Yetunde Onanuga.

He added that the measure was designed to check menace of ghost workers in the workforce in view of the lean purse of the government.

‎Adeoluwa said: “This was one of the resolutions reached in a follow-up meeting between the leadership of the organised labour movement in Ogun State and officials of the state government led by the Deputy Governor, Chief (Mrs.) Yetunde Onanuga, on Friday.”

The SSG, however, said that dialogue was ongoing on the unresolved issues between the government and the civil servants, which included the non-payment of pensions, gratuities, deductions of salaries and other demands.

He expressed optimism that the festering issues would soon be permanently resolved, while boasting: “Ogun State is unique as we have continued to engage and dialogue with the organised labour.‎”

“As part of our continuous discussions, we have both agreed that we should take advantage of the BVN system to ensure that our scarce resources are not going to ghost workers,” Adeoluwa said.

He added: “In view of this, we have agreed that starting from the end of April 2016 salaries will be paid using the BVN of all workers.”

However, the State Chairman, Trade Union Congress, Comrade Olubunmi Fajobi and Comrade Abiodun Olakanmi of the Joint Negotiating Council, said that they totally supported the resolution on the BVN initiative.

Both union leaders demanded that government should officially communicate the decision to the workers via the office of the Head of Service to ensure adequate notice for compliance.

Also, Onanuga said that she was delighted with the peaceful nature of the talks, while adding that the peaceful dialogue would continue with the hope of finding lasting and more sustainable resolution to the demands of the aggrieved civil servants.

She further stated that the Friday parley was one of a series of engagements between the union leaders and the government.

“As stakeholders, we are committed to jointly finding a lasting and sustainable solution to the issues raised by the labour movement,” she said.
