Police say that on Wednesday a man was walking alone on Legnano Crescent near Weston Road and Rutherford Road, when he was approached by a group of males with baseball bats.
One of the group, armed with a knife, demanded the victim hand over all his belongings, police say. The attackers beat the victim with the bats before they fled on foot.
The man was taken to hospital due to his injuries.
The suspects were identified and arrested shortly afterwards. Officers seized several firearms, knives, bats, drugs and several prohibited weapons.
The same suspects are believed to be responsible for a number of other incidents. Investigators believe there may be even more incidents than have been reported, because victims were afraid of the group.
Police are asking anyone who may have been the victim of such a robbery to contact investigating officers, who have reclaimed stolen property that they would like to return to the proper owners.
One 15-year-old from Vaughan, three 16-year-olds from Vaughan and a 17-year-old from King, all male, have been charged with a variety of offences including: robbery, extortion, uttering threats, unauthorized possession of a firearm, possession of cocaine, and possession for the purpose — cannabis, and possession of stolen property.
All five youths will appear in the Ontario Youth Court of Justice in Newmarket on June 10. Their names cannot be released under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.
Anyone with information relating to the investigation is asked to contact police at: 1-866-876-5423, ext. 7443, or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-TIPS.
