NIGERIA: The Committee for the Defence of Human Right (CDHR) has pleaded with the Federal Government to ensure that all looters of the nation’s funds in the last 17 years are sent to jail.

The CDHR made the plea on Wednesday at its anti-corruption rally held in Lagos, which was attended by scores of activists.

The National President, Malarchy Uwguwumadu, who spoke at the rally, stressed that all the looters must be jailed to serve as a lesson to others and discourage them from stealing the nation’s wealth.

While speaking at the event, activist lawyer, Femi Falana, said that all retrieved stolen funds could fix the power problem and ensure the provision of basic amenities for the citizens.

The National Publicity Secretary of the committee, Rasheed Raji Ropo, said that since 17 years ago when Nigeria returned to civilian administration, the country has been bedevilled with corruption and gross misrule.

Ropo explained in a statement that political office holders had been exploiting the nation, while poverty and deprivation have been on the rise.

He bemoaned that Nigeria which produces almost two millions barrel of oil per day has its citizens in poorest condition that they barely live on less than $100 dollars a day.

The CDHR explained that the money looted and misappropriated by public officials, which runs into trillions of naira, were more than enough to ensure the provision of first class hospital in the nation.

It stated that part of the stolen funds would meet the UNESCO 26 percent funding level for education, adding that it would establish ventures that would generate jobs.

“The strength to seek redress, punish severely those who have looted our commonwealth lie with all of us as members of the public,” the CDHR said, adding: “We must develop unparalleled contempt for the looters and rapers of our collective destiny, expose them and clamour for them to be sanctioned according to laws of the land.”

“We must not forget that a people united, can never be defeated,” it said, while also saying: “The time to take our destiny in our hands is now.”
