…Institution to have hostels 37 years after establishment

NIGERIA: MOSHOOD Abiola Polytechnic, formerly famous as Ogun State Polytechnic, Abeokuta, will soon become degree awarding institution, the Governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun, has said.

Amosun gave this hint on Thursday at the 14^th convocation ceremony of the polytechnic, established in 1979 by the late Chief Olabisi Onabanjo’s first civilian administration.

The Governor said that the polytechnic had taken necessary measures to become degree awarding institution.

Amosun added that the steps had reached advanced stage that would enable the institution transform into degree awarding polytechnic.

‎In this regard, the Governor said that the National University Commission would soon visit the institution to commence work on the transformation.

The governor, however, announced automatic employment for all graduands who obtained distinction at the convocation.

Amosun, who obtained a Higher National Diploma (HND) in Accountancy from the polytechnic, also said that government would sponsor anyone of them ready to embark on further studies.

And at last, any moment from now the 37-year-old polytechnic, named after the winner of the annulled June 12, 1993 presidential election, the late Bashorun M.K.O. Abiola, would be residential.

The Chairman, Governing Council of the polytechnic, Chief (Mrs.) Alaba Oluwaseun Lawson, disclosed this while speaking at the convocation.

Lawson, who is the Iyalode of Egbaland and Yorubaland, said that the first step to actualize this dream had been taken with some reputable private developers.

According to her, the polytechnic had entered into the Bill of Transfer partnership agreements with the developers to construct three clusters of 2,500 bed spaces for the students.

The Chairman explained that Copa Cabana and North Croft Plc had commenced work on the project.

She said: “This is to alleviate‎ the current pains and sufferings of the students who have had to travel long distance between their rented apartments in the town and the polytechnic campus.”

Lawson, who is the owner of Lawson Group of Schools, also said that the hostels would not also enhance the status of the polytechnic, but make it viable for elevation into a degree awarding University of Technology in the nearest future.

She praised the government of Amosun on its untiring efforts at effectively occupying the polytechnic by chasing out land speculators who had constituted menace and stumbling block to the physical development of the polytechnic.

Lawson told the graduating students to demonstrate a very high level of ingenuity by using their hands and intellect to create jobs and wealth for themselves.

She said this became necessary “because the days of total reliance on white collar jobs are no longer here.”

Lawson declared: “I encourage you to be good ambassadors of this great citadel of learning. Let me also congratulate and commend your parents who have labored and struggled over the years to make you realize your dreams.  I pray that you all live to enjoy the fruits of your labour by the grace of Jehovah.”
