NIGERIA: SIXTY years ago, precisely, 3rd February, 1956, a child was born to the family of Omooba Disu Adenugba of the royal family of Okokodana dynasty of Ago-Iwoye, and Olori Sabitiyu Adeola (Nee Delagunren), of the Paripete royal family of Ago-Iwoye.
The child, who has royal blood flowing in his veins from childbirth, was christened Abdul-Razaq Adesina Adenugba.
As he was growing up, the appellation of ‘Prince’ stuck to his name because of his royal background, and this led to his being addressed widely as Prince Sina Adenugba by family, friends and associates until he became the traditional ruler of Ago-Iwoye.
Young Sina, who never had an inkling of becoming a royal father, related freely with everybody, particularly his neighbourhood friends and school mates with whom they got exposed to life as young boys and girls. This attribute perhaps explain why, today, Oba Abdul-Razaq Adesina Adenugba is a highly sociable personality whose friends and associates cut across different strata of the society.
Oba Adenugba is an alumnus of Yaba College of Technology, University of Lagos and University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, where he bagged OND Business Administration, B.Sc Accounting and MBA respectively. He had a fulfilling career at United Bank for Africa, where he worked from 1982 to 1996, and rose to become a senior manager before he retired. He was also the Chief Executive Officer of BOMAD Nigeria Ltd, a communication outfit.
In fulfillment of a divine call, Oba Abdul-Razaq Adesina Adenugba, whose grandfather, Oba Akadi Adenugba was the first beaded and crowned Ebumawe of Ago-Iwoye from 1932 to 1944, ascended the throne of his forefathers as the 5th Ebumawe of Ago-Iwoye on 8th May, 2004. His ascension to the throne was indeed a turning point in his life and in the history of Ago-Iwoye, as he was widely accepted by the entire Ago-Iwoye community following his rancor-free selection.
Oba Adenugba, in appreciation of his acceptability assured the people of Ago-Iwoye of rapid transformation and development of the town during his reign. However, in spite of some challenges he faced on the throne, his footprints still abound in the various developmental activities engendered in the town.
Oba Adenugba’s modest achievements on the throne cannot be wished away, as his reign has brought about peaceful co-existence among the people of the town, which is allowing development to take place. There is also cordial relationship between the town and Olabisi Onabanjo University Community under his watch, while more businesses are now being established in the town. Such businesses include quarry sites, hotels, private schools, filling stations etc. Generally, there is an improvement in commerce and commercial activities which has led to socio-economic development of the town.
In order to foster the spirit of unity and communal development in the town, Oba Adenugba has resuscitated the Age Group Associations (Regberegbe), which are partnering with the Kabiyesi in the development of the town.
While there is still a lot of room for improvement, Oba Adenugba has not relented in reaching out to all sons and daughters of Ago-Iwoye and well wishers to support him in the onerous task of taking the town to higher level.
As His Royal Highness, Oba Abdul-Razaq Adesina Adenugba, Ebumawe of Ago-Iwoye celebrates his 60th birthday anniversary; we pray that Almighty God grant him more wisdom, long life and good health on the throne.
