NIGERIA: A GRANDMOTHER who inflicted injury on her grandchild has been arrested by the Ogun State Police Command.
The culprit, Bose Adebayo, was apprehended for slamming the victim, Tope Oke, with hot pot for allegedly eating a bowl of rice without her permission.
The incident occurred at Baba Olodo House in Ijeun Titun, Oloronbo community in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital.
The girl, who is a primary two pupil of St. James Primary School, Ijeun-Titun, Abeokuta, landed into her grandmother’s trouble when she ate a portion of the rice which was kept as a reserve.
Adebayo was said to have returned from a party with some cooked rice served at the event she prior attended, but without her permission Tope, who was said to be hungry, ate the rice to the annoyance of the suspect.
Eyewitness told GatewayMail that after beating the eight-year-old girl, the grandmother feeling unsatisfied picked up a hot pot and rammed it on Tope’s cheek, thus causing her bodily harm.
It was further learnt that neighbours, who heard of the incident, alerted the police, a non-governmental organisation, Child Protection Network (CPN), and the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development.
The suspect was said to have been detained at the Ibara police station, while sources further said that Adebayo was expected to be moved to Anti-Human Trafficking Department.
GatewayMail further gathered that officials of the Ministry, who included Adenike Osoba, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Women Affairs and Social Development, and Mrs. Wonuola Kassim, the Senior Social Welfare Officer, were at the police station to monitor the case.
Osoba told journalists that the grandmother had displayed cruelty and inhuman behaviour, as a result of which she must face prosecution.
The Special Adviser stated that government would not condone such cruelty or allow anyone to maltreat children or any other person in the state.
She explained that Tope would be in the Ministry’s custody after proper treatment at the hospital.
However, the Ogun State Police Command Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi, has confirmed the incident.
Adejobi, a Deputy Superintendent of Police, said that the grandmother would be charged to court after the police would have completed investigations.
