NIGERIA: APPARENTLY toeing the same line with his fellow traditional ruler, the Alake of Egbaland, Oba Adedotun Aremu Gbadebo, on Tuesday endorsed the anti-corruption crusade of President Muhammadu Buhari.
The Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, had on Monday said he supported the President’s war against corruption in the country.
Oba Adetona, who prayed for the success of the Buhari administration at the banquet held for him, said that he was totally in support of the war against corruption, while urging Nigerians to support the President in this direction.
Oba Adetona said: “If we don’t face corruption, corruption will kill us. And we don’t want corruption to kill us. So, Nigerians must support your efforts.”
In the same vein, Oba Gbadebo, who worked under the military administration of Buhari with his late Chief of Staff, Brigadier-General Tunde Idiagbon, said that he totally supported the President’s war against corruption in the country.
The Egba monarch gave the support in his palace when Buhari visited him as part of his activities to mark the 40th anniversary of the creation of Ogun State.
The traditional ruler said that the war should not be “just a flash but a process that will last forever.”
Oba Gbadebo recalled that the vision and mission of Buhari during his military regime between 1983 and 1985 was meant to “give Nigerians a corrupt-free nation where greed, gluttony and avarice would have no place.”
According to him, the president’s “relentless war against the national cankerworm is both nationally and international acclaimed.”
Buhari, at the palace, commended the Governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun, saying that he had foresight in the infrastructural facilities executed by his administration within five years in office. The President said that Amosun displayed rare courage in changing the face of the state, adding that he recalled how Abeokuta was in 1963 during the number of periods he visited the town.
The President, who said the roads then were narrow, said that “what I have seen today has convinced me of the foresight and courage of Governor Amosun.”
“I think the roads only bicycles could pass through then, but now he has expanded them and made them beautiful,” Buhari said. “Now I couldn’t even recognize where we used to come and dance. Everywhere is wearing a new, good look and that’s why I associate with him.”
“Nobody wants to associate with failure,” a highly elated President said.
Earlier, Amosun had informed Oba Gbadebo that he invited Buhari to the state to see the myriad of achievements recorded since the 40 years existence of the Gateway State.
He appreciated the president for granting the invitation in spite of his tight schedule.
Among personalities that accompanied the President to the palace were Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, and Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina.
Scores of Egba traditional rulers and chiefs who attended the event were Olu of Itori, Oba Akorede Akamo, the Towulade of Akinale, Oba Olufemi Ogunleye, Erelu Dosunmu Fernadez, Iyalode of Egbaland, Chief (Mrs.) Alaba Oluwaseun Lawson, Oluwo of Iporo, Chief Suara Alani Bankole, and former administrator of Bauchi and Sokoto states, retired Navy Captain Rasheed Raji.
