NIGERIA: A MEMBER of Eye Confraternity has confessed to killing 15 persons, including the former Chairman of the Oodua People’s Congress (OPC) in Ijebu-Igbo, Ogun State, the late Chief Tola Okuneye, who was murdered in a church.
The 23-year-old Kazeem Tiamiyu said that though he was not part of the team that carried out the killing, but his fellow gang members stormed the St. John’s Anglican Church, Oke-Sopen in Ijebu-Igbo and murdered Okuneye, who was the Chairman of the Ijebu North Police Community Relations Committee.
It would be recalled that the 70-year-old Okuneye, a popular furniture maker cum businessman, was killed by a 10-member gang that rode to the church in a Lagos commercial yellow colour vehicle around 11am on Sunday, April 6, 2014 and shot him in the head and chest.
GatewayMail learnt that the Ijebu-Igbo chief, who had six wives and 20 children, was said to have died immediately on the spot before he could be rushed to the hospital for treatment.
Tiamiyu, who made the confession while being paraded by the Ogun State Police Command, stated that the series of killings he carried out took place in Ijebu-Ode and its neighbouring towns and villages
He mentioned some of the persons he killed included Solar, Sappio, Odunalayo, Akeem, Folly, Ade, Ayokun, Seun and Bisi.
On Okuneye, the suspect said that after his gang members murdered him, a pair of the late businessman’s ear was cut off, and later used for oath-taking among them.
“I was not part of that operation, but was led by Femi Kuti, but after the killing, one of the victim’s ears was cut off,” he said, adding: “The gang later converged at our hideout, where we use the ear to take oath of secrecy.”
Tiamiyu, who was arrested at number 9, Oreagba Street, Ondo Road, Ijebu-Ode, narrated that Okuneye, often called Ajagajigi, was murdered because he became a stumbling block to their nefarious activities in the area.
The suspect, however, stressed that he regretted his action, even as he said that he had taken his arrest as a design by fate.
The command’s Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi, told reporters during the media briefing at Eleweran, Abeokuta, that the suspect, often called ‘Butcher’ among his cult members was apprehended during investigations carried out by policemen into various cases of killings and cult activities in the state.
Adejobi, a Deputy Superintendent of Police, disclosed that items recovered when the suspect was nabbed included barreled cut to size gun, one single barrel cut-to-size gun, four single barreled short guns, seven rounds of live cartridges, expended cartridge and assorted charms.
The police image maker explained that after the conclusion of investigations, Tiamiyu would appear in court, adding that the police would also ensure that other fleeing members of the gang are arrested soon.
