NIGERIA: IN the presence of the Ogun State Police Commissioner, Abulmajid Ali, the Olu of Itori, Oba Fatai Akamo, a member of the House of Representatives, Ibrahim Isiaka and his state counterpart, Israel Jolaoso, 12 erstwhile cult members have renounced their membership and vowed never to return to the secret group.

The cultists, led by an Islamic cleric, Adeola Abdul-Rasheed, on Wednesday promised to be born

*Cultists...We are now born again.
*Cultists…We are now born again.

again after signing an undertaken to be of good conduct henceforth.

Abdul-Rasheed, while speaking on behalf of his colleagues, assured that after they had seen the need to shun cultism, he would help in the fight against the secret associations.

He told those present at the renunciation event held at Ewekoro Local Government headquarters at Itori that all of them had realised the ugly side of being members of cult groups.

Among those present at the occasion where the erstwhile cultists – who were artisans – took oath with Bible and Quran were scores of village heads within the council domain.

It would be recalled that the men were apprehended by the state police command in areas under the local government, but after conducting investigations and some elders intervened they were granted pardon.

To show they would have nothing to do with cultism again, they promised to denounce their membership in the public glare, after they were handed over to their respective community leaders.

Ali, who was elated with the development, said the event was historic and a sign of hope on the war against cultism in the state.

The police boss charged the former cultists to ensure they never go back to the group, while he advised those still in cultism to be bold enough to denounce their membership in order to be granted amnesty from prosecution.

He warned that after the opportunity, those caught would not be spared, but would be prosecuted in law courts.

Ali restated his vow to tackle cultism in the state and other crimes, just as he appealed to residents of the state to support the command in its efforts to achieve this.
