NIGERIA: FORMER President Olusegun Obasanjo has formally accepted the conferment of the doctorate degree awarded him by the Tai Solarin University of Education, Ijagun, Ijebu-Ode in Ogun State.
“I feel highly honoured by the kind sentiments expressed in your letter, and the kind gesture, which I accept with pleasure,” a highly elated Obasanjo said.
“I want to thank the Senate and the University’s Governing Council for the honour done me,” the ex-President stressed, adding: “This award is not only to honour me, but it is also an award for all the great men and women who have worked tirelessly with me in all the undertakings I have had in my life.”
The conferment on Obasanjo, alongside the late Chief (Mrs.) Hannah Idowu Dideolu Awolowo, and Africa’s richest man, Alhaji Aliko Dangote, will take place during the 10th anniversary and 6th and 7th convocation ceremony of the institution which has been scheduled for Saturday, November 28, 2015.
Obasanjo had conveyed his feeling in the letter dated November 9, 2015 accepting the Doctor of Science Education in Political Science, to the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Oluyemisi Obilade.
He said: “I received your letter of November 3, 2015, by which you confirmed the decision of the Governing Council and the Senate of Tai Solarin University of Education to confer on me an Honourary Doctoral Degree award of Doctor of Science Education in Political Science at the 10th anniversary of the University on November 28, 2015.”
The university Governing Council and management had earlier stormed the Abeokuta residence of the former President to convey the decision to honour him.
The vice-chancellor said Obasanjo deserved the award because it was under his administration that the university was licensed on November 28, 2005.
Obilade explained that it was a unanimous decision of the university’s Governing Council following the overwhelming recommendation of the Senate, to appreciate Obasanjo for his unalloyed support to the University, contributions to the educational development of the country and his selfless service to humanity in general.
