Nigerian, Okafor, to die in US for killing trial witness in robbery case

US: A NIGERIAN man has been sentenced to death in California, United States of America.
Thirty-year-old Bessman Okafor was found guilty of first-degree murder by an Orange County Court presided over by Judge Marshall Kest.
The judge pronounced the judgment on Okafor, who lived at Pine Hills, after he had been found guilty by a 12-man jury, with a vote of 11 to one last September.
The Nigerian ran afoul of the law when he killed a man who was to testify against him, and wounded others, in a robbery invasion in Ocoee.
Okafor, who has been in jail serving life sentence for home invasion and robbery, was alleged to have murdered a 19-year-old trial witness, Alex Zaldivar, who lived in Ocoee, with Brienna Campos together with her brother, Remington Campos.
Okafor, according to the crown, in cohort with two other culprits, had robbed in May 2012, but his fellow offenders were apprehended by the police.
However, Zaldivar and Brienna, had been arranged to testify against the bandits, but a day before their appearance in court, specifically on September 10, Okafor killed one of the witnesses.
The Nigerian, according to prosecutors, shot the 19-year-old man dead while Brienna and Remington narrowly escaped death by the whiskers.
They were hit by Okafor’s bullets but survived after treatment in the hospital and they later gave evidence against the Nigerian.
While the judge affirmed the death verdict, Okafor closed his eyes, and he only moved his head few times, apparently in shock over the court’s decision.
Judge Kest said in his judgement: “Because Mr. Okafor was the individual who planned and researched the attack, recruited the personnel, arranged for the lookouts, orchestrated the assault on the home of the victims, participated in the shooting and killing, or attempted killings of the victims, the court finds that the death sentence would be appropriate.”
While saying that he noticed the plea in defence of Okafor – which included abuse and neglect by his family, claims of sexual abuse by a church member, money troubles, and a learning disability as his defence – the judge said that none of those adduced could rubbish the dastardly crime he committed.
However, sources said that Okafor is likely to appeal the judgment due to the non-unanimous agreement by the 12-man jury on the death verdict.
He has 30 days to file his appeal under the US law, failure of which the judgment stays.
