The incident happened last October 31 and it involved one woman, Ifeoluwa Yekini, who lived within the vicinity, the police said on Tuesday.

“The suspect (now in police custody), who had been monitoring the mother of the baby while pregnant, went under the pretense of felicitating with the mother in her house at the same village, requested to back the baby, which the mother obliged her,” the Ogun State Police Command Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, said in a release.

Adejobi, a Deputy Superintendent of Police, further narrated: “She went further by requesting from the mother to take the baby out to shop for the little baby girl. But at the market, the suspect decided to run away with the baby to an unknown place.

“The mother of the baby, after several efforts to locate her with the baby, then reported the case to the police at the Police Divisional Headquarters in Ifo for search and necessary investigation.”

According to the police image maker, the suspect had earlier feigned to be pregnant for her husband, while using some medications, took permission from her unsuspecting husband to visit the parents of the stolen baby.

Adejobi explained further that at the village, Ifeoluwa called her husband to inform him that she had given birth to a baby.

“This was so suspicious and her relations and neighbors raised alarm which compelled her to flee to Onipanu area in Ota, Ogun State where she was eventually arrested on 14th November, 2015 at 0500hrs,” the police spokesperson said.

He added: “The suspect was arrested by combined teams of Onipanu and Ifo Divisions of the command when the suspect, who had been placed under surveillance by the police, was sighted in the area.”

In this regard, according to Adejobi, the state Commissioner of Police, Abdulmajid Ali, has charged parents to protect their children.

The commissioner, he also said, enjoined the parents to keep watch over their children always.

“He stressed that this case should be a lesson to many mothers,” Adejobi said, adding: “CP Abdulmajid Ali has, however, directed that the case be charged to court as the command will not tolerate any act of criminality in Ogun State.”
