NIGERIA: FOUR men with explosive devices have been apprehended in Ayepe area of Ogun State.
Though they claimed to have invaded the Gateway State to rob, but the explosives found with them were connected to a wire, apparently for easy detonation.
It would be recalled that members of the dreaded Islamic sect, Boko Haram, had used explosive devices to blow up buildings, including churches and mosques, and parks, and killed thousands of people in some Northern parts of the country, including Abuja, the seat of the Federal Government.
The Ogun State Deputy Commissioner of Police, Celestine Okoye, who paraded the arrested men while briefing reporters on the activities of the Police Command, said that 10 other suspects were picked up in various parts of the state during police operations.
Okoye said at the Eleweran Police Headquarters that the men – Gelebele Aitlabor, Moses Demene, Mohammed Kaidiri and Friday Saborom – after interrogation claimed that theycame to the state to meet their gang leader for possible robbery operations.
“On search on the bag, four explosive devices with three connection wires were recovered from them,” Okoye said, adding: “The suspects confessed that they were coming from Delta State to meet their gang leader named Wisdom in Ogun State now at large.”
Okoye explained that the culprits were nabbed after policemen on patrol at Ayepe received information that the men were seen with in possession of suspicious bags
They were subsequently arrested, he said, adding that the case is still under investigation for further details, and thereafter they would be charged to court.
The deputy commissioner also said that 10 suspects picked up were in police net for crimes which included shop breaking, fraud, cultism, armed robbery and murder.
He explained that some items recovered from the suspected bandits were iron rod, damaged padlock, mobile phone, N45,000, and locally made double barrel pistol.
Others, he further stressed, included live cartridges, battle axe, locally made axe, knife, charms, chisels, and hammer.
