NIGERIA: TWO persons alleged to be students of Moshood Abiola Polytechnic, Abeokuta, Ogun State have been shot dead by suspected cultists.
The clash, which led to the dead of the duo and occurred barely few hours after the students finished their Ordinary National Diploma final examination on Tuesday, was alleged to have been between two rival cult groups in the polytechnic.
The alleged male students were said to have been killed in Onikolobo, the students highly populated area of the state
capital. It occurred during a procession to mark the successful end of their final examination.
GatewayMail learnt that during the celebration, the two cult groups engaged themselves in supremacy tussle which led to firing of gunshots – which made residents of the community and passesby scampered for safety.
By the time the normalcy returned, two of the students laid dead at the scene of the scuffle, it was learnt.
The policemen from the Adigbe area, who were alerted and arrived in their van, were seen taking away the bodies of the killed students to the morgue.
The Public Relations Officer of the polytechnic, Mr. Sulaimon Adebiyi, who visited the scene, denied the claim that the students were from the institution, saying that nothing was found on the students to link them with the polytechnic.
Adebiyi said: “Am here because I received a call just as many of us did that there is a student of ours, that was the language the person used, lying lifeless on the road and the spontaneous reaction is to confirm if the report was true or not and that was why we are here.”
He added that after the search on the students, which was conducted in the presence of the police and the public, there was no identification to justify the victims were students of the polytechnic.
“This is second semester 2014/2015 and our students are undergoing examinations as we speak and there is no way a student will go into an examination hall without elements of identification,” Adebiyi said.
