The conference, set up by ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, submitted its report on August 21, 2014 with several recommendations, which included resource control/derivation principle/fiscal federalism; creation of 18 new states; public finance/revenue allocation; forms of government; legislature; and power sharing and rotation.
Among other recommendations of the body, chaired by retired Justice Idris Kutigi, are local government; immunity clause; independent candidacy; governance; anti corruption; land tenure act; and religion.
According to the group in a statement signed by its National Coordinator, Paul Oni, the conference was organised by the administration of Jonathan to entrench and implement true federalism.
This should not be washed away, the group said, adding that if the resolutions could be implemented, the issue of marginalization in appointments and various programmes of the government would become a thing of the past.
The group said: “We encourage the Federal Government to reconsider the last National Confab Resolutions being similitude of a Blueprint towards achieving True Federalism with a view to implementing them.”
Taking a look at the ministerial list of President Muhammadu Buhari, the group charged the President to ensure that those with corrupt records are appointed into any public office in whatever capacity.
It stated that it would always stand behind Buhari government’s efforts to tackle corruption and corrupt individuals, particularly those appointed into public offices to serve the nation.
“We stand for fiscal discipline and transparency for our leaders to forestall corruption,” it said. “We advise government to exempt any person who has corruptly enriched himself from being appointed into public office.”
