Poly verifies retirees, praises ex-workers

NIGERIA: IN order to update her records of pensioners, the Management of the Federal Polytechnic, Offa, recently conducted verification exercise for all her retirees under the Unified Pension and Gratuity Scheme.

The verification exercise is an aspect of the instant rules that governed the operation of retirement under the Unified Pension and Gratuity Scheme.

Speaking at the opening session, the Rector, Dr. Mufutau Olatinwo, praised the retirees for the meritorious services rendered for the development of the Polytechnic.

He said that the Polytechnic attached much importance to the well-being of her pensioners, thus the reason behind the establishment of a separate Unit for Pension and Passages in order to promptly attend to pensioners’ needs.

The Rector who spoke through his Deputy Rector, Administration, Dr. (Mrs.) Ayodele Olaosebikan, informed the Management had always ensured prompt payment of pension immediately the staff of the Polytechnic were paid monthly salaries.

He also informed that the Management holds Board of Trustee (BOT) meetings regularly. The Board comprises of the Rector, the Registrar, Bursar, and representatives of the Federal Ministry of Education, Pension Transitional Arrangement Directorate (PTAD), Insurance Underwriter, Insurance Broker, Polytechnic Association of Pensioners and staff Unions – ASUP, SSANIP and NASU.

“In order to meet with the global standard, the Polytechnic holds the meeting of the Board of Trustees regularly to discuss and resolve pension related matters and prevent crisis,” the Rector said in a release signed by the Head, Public Relations and Protocol Unit, Mr. Ladi Badmus.

“The Board which has representatives of the Federal Ministry of Education, Pension Transitional Arrangement Directorate (PTAD), Insurance Underwriter, Insurance Broker, staff Unions as well as representative of pensioners as its members; ensures that the Polytechnic implements policies on pension as approved by the Federal Government,” he added.

Aside giving the Management the opportunity of meeting with her pensioners physically and to update necessary information about pensioners, the exercise was also aimed at verifying the pensioners for the production and issuance of identity cards.

The retirees were informed that PTAD would soon take over the payment of their pension from BOT.

In his remarks, Chairman of the Polytechnic Pensioners Association of Nigeria, Mr. James Fabule, who retired in 1999, commended the Rector for his regular support.

He also thanked the retirees for their selfless contributions to the Polytechnic during their service years.

While applauding the Management on the creation of Pension and Passages Desk to promptly attend to requests of the pensioners, he stated that there was no issue of fraud in the Polytechnic pension matters and that the Polytechnic was not owing any pension arrears as all the backlog had been paid.

Others present at the exercise were Deputy Registrar, Senior Staff Establishment, Alhaji Isiaka Agboola, who represented the Registrar, Mr. Abubakar Bisiriyu, representative of the Senior Staff Association of Nigeria Polytechnics (SSANIP) on the Polytechnic Pension Board of Trustees (BOT) and Mr. Raphael Oloyede, representing Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU) on the BOT.
