SAUDI ARABIA: FROM far away Saudi Arabia – in the holy land – has come a condolence message from the Ogun State Governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun.
The governor, who is also in Mecca for the hajj, has commiserated with the families of his fellow pilgrims who died in Thursday’s stampede while attempting to stone the symbol of Satan in Mecca.
It would be recalled that no fewer than 717 pilgrims died in a stampede while participating in the hajj Islamic rituals, which fell on Sallah celebration day.
Nigerians were among the victims, sources in the holy land told Gatewaymail, adding that more African nations may have lost their nationals too.
Gatewaymail had further reported yesterday that it learnt also that 863 others were confirmed injured in Mina as over two million Muslims worldwide gathered to fulfill the last part of the yearly Islamic injunction.
Amosun, who was apparently touched by the loss, “expressed his deepest condolences to President Muhammadu Buhari.”
The governor spoke through his Secretary to the State Government, Barrister Taiwo Adeoluwa, who signed the release condoling governors Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos State, Aminu Bello Masari of Katsina State and Kashim Shettima of Borno State, whose pilgrims died in the stampede.
Amosun while saying that the deaths were regrettable especially when they could have been avoided, urged pilgrims across the world to always observe codes that would engender an incident-free pilgrimage.
Similarly, Amosun advised the Saudi authorities to further improve on their safety measures in order to prevent recurrence of the unfortunate incident.
The governor prayed and urged Allah to comfort the families across the world that lost their loved ones at the Grand Mosque and Mina, and grant the deceased Aljannah firdaus.
He equally wished those who sustained injuries a speedy recovery.
