NIGERIA: THE National Universities Commission has directed the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB) to oversee the activities of two private universities in the country.

The FUNAAB Vice-Chancellor, Professor Olusola Oyewole, who made this known in Abeokuta, said that his university would mentor Mountain Top University and Chrisland University, to become institutions to be reckoned with as citadels of learning.

The university, on its website, said that Oyewole, who received the management team of the two universities for consolidation of the NUC directive, expressed delight on the step taken by the commission.

The visit to FUNAAB, it was learnt, was for the two higher institutions to form partnership with the university which was established on January 1, 1988.

Oyewole, who told his visitors that his university was open to collaboration within and outside the country, highlighted the quality of the staff strength and adequate infrastructural facilities.

He stressed that FUNAAB had world-class agenda that borders on the provision of visionary leadership and commitment to quality in its activities coupled with sound funds management.

In his response, Mountain Top University (MTU) Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Elijah Ayolabi, said he was not new to the university, having come before as a resource person at a time.

He said: “Today, I can see a lot of transformation around.  When the NUC told us that FUNAAB would be out mentor, I think God must have been working behind the scenes in the sense that University of Lagos is the closest to us.

“We were not given to them but we were sent here and only to discover that it is like sending us home because we found out that we have our own, someone who understands our language, who understands the mission and vision of the Proprietor of the university, who would be able to support us, both physically and spiritually.”

Similarly, Oyewole expressed the readiness of the university to mentor Christland University and other universities that may be in need of such intervention.

The Vice-Chancellor of Chrisland University, Professor Olusola Odeyemi, expressed optimism that her University was going to receive enough cooperation from the mentoring university, as she appreciated the Vice-Chancellor of FUNAAB for the support given so far.
