LONDON: QUEEN Elizabeth II on Wednesday became the longest reigning monarch in the history of the royalty in Britain.
The queen, who commended well-wishers, surpassed the record of her great-great-grandmother, Queen Victoria.
She stated that she felt touched by the “messages of kindness” that were sent to her across the globe from different personalities, among who are presidents, fellow monarchs and prominent persons.
Going by the record, the 89-year-old queen attained the status after reigning for 23,226 days, 16 hours and about 30 minutes on the throne she ascended on February 6, 1952.
The elated queen, who addressed crowds briefly earlier in the day, said that the longest reigning monarch status was “not one to which I have ever aspired,” adding: “Inevitably a long life can pass by many milestones – my own is no exception – but I thank you all and the many others at home and overseas for your touching messages of great kindness.”
Prime Minister David Cameron stated that the services which the queen had rendered to Britain were indeed “truly humbling.”
